Atrazine is a white crystalline herbicide that is within the triazine class that does not occur naturally. Atrazine has been historically used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds on crop land (corn and sorghum), sugar cane, pineapple, turf grass, conifer trees, utility/ railroad/ highway right-of-ways, and residential lawns. "Atrazine is produced by a continuous process where isopropylamine is reacted with cyanuric acid under basic conditions, forming 2,4-dichloro-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine, which is then reacted with monoethylamine and dilute caustic to form atrazine". (Source) Seventy million pounds of atrazine are used each year in the United States (Source).
Atrazine is a hormone disruptor that may be associated with birth defects, liver, kidney, and heart damage, and cancer (mammary gland tumors) in animals. Atrazine does not bioaccumulate in the food chain, but some will temporarily be stored in fat in the body. Typically, atrazine and its breakdown products will leave the body within about 24 to 48 hours in urine and fecal material.
In the environment, atrazine can be a significant concern to water supplies due to its popularity, relatively long half life (60 to 100 days), and because it is not strongly adsorbed by soil (Koc = ~100).
"Not enough information is available to definitely state whether atrazine causes cancer in humans. Studies of human populations indicate that there may be a link between atrazine use and some types of cancer, but the information was not specific enough to make a definitive connection between atrazine and cancer." Atrazine has been associated with low blood pressure, muscle spasms, damage to adrenal glands, and issues related to the heart, lungs, and kidneys (Source).
Atrazine is regulated as a primary drinking water standard and the MCL and the MCLG is 0.003 mg/L and the EPA does not consider it carcinogenic. The EPA has a DWEL of 0.7 mg/L (noncarcinogenic). California has a standard of 0.001 mg/L.
It is unlikely that a city or regulated community water supply source would be contaminated with atrazine, but this is more likely in private water supply systems, transient non-community systems, and surface water sources in agricultural areas. You should get your drinking water tested for atrazine when you are getting your drinking water from a groundwater source, spring, or surface water source that is located in an agricultural watershed area that includes crops such as corn, soybean, wheat, and peanuts or a right-of-way that uses a herbicide for broadleaf and grass control. Other areas of potential contamination include old landfills, herbicide manufacturers, and chemical storage areas. Therefore, it is more about location, location, location and historic land use.
Level 1 Testing is done with simple observations that an individual can make with their own senses such as sight, smell, and taste. These observations can be readily apparent or can be observed as they change over time. In addition, accessible related information about the home can also be used to narrow down the cause of your water issues.
There are few warning signs of a problem when atrazine is present at a level that is less than the drinking water standard. The best screening test is location, location, and location and an understanding of the source of your water and the historic land use in the region.
A study by the USGS in the Mid-Atlantic Region found some of the most commonly used synthetic organic compounds are atrazine and other triazines, metolachlor, and alachlor.
Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.
Most at-home screening tests for pesticides are actually a screening test for the trazine group of herbicides. Atrazine is part of the triazine herbicide group. If you are considering a home screening test, it would be advisable to also test for Total Coliform, E. coli, Nitrates and Nitrites and you may want to check your fruits and vegetables for pesticide residual. If you have health issues, you may want to consider conducting a 5 Strands test for food and environmental sensitivity or DNA screening (23andMe).

This type of testing not only gives you the highest level of assurance in the accuracy of your test results, but can also be used as a document in legal cases. If you need certified testing for atrazine, we would advise testing for a broader range of herbicides and pesticides as well as salts like chloride, nitrate, nitrite and phosphate, and the microbiological quality of the water. If there is an odor that appears petrochemical-like or sweet, we would suggest testing for volatile organic compounds. Since glyphosate has replaced atrazine in many applications, it may also be advisable to test for glyphosate.
It is unlikely that a city or regulated community water supply source would be contaminated with atrazine, but this is more likely for private water supply systems or transient non-community systems. There may be a concern if you are located in a rural agricultural area, in an area that manufacturers or stores atrazine, near a landfill, or in an area with railroad lines and other right-of-ways. Semi-volatile organic compounds can typically be treated and removed from water using carbon filtration, but it is unlikely that air sparging or aeration would be effective.
Because of concerns related to the exposure to atrazine via consumption, inhalation, and dermal contact, the primary recommendation is be to develop an alternative potable water source and to use bottled water. For trace levels of atrazine or synthetic organic compounds, it may be advisable to use a point-of-use Carbon Filtration system or whole-house granular-activated-carbon unit.

Regarding developing a long-term solution, it is critical to not only understand the source, extent, and nature of the contamination, but also to understand the secondary contaminants that may be associated with Herbicide and Pesticide. For example, herbicide and pesticide contamination may be associated with nitrate, nitrite, heterotrophic Bacteria, Total Coliform Bacteria, E. coli, Chloride, Sodium, and other organic compounds.
