Glyphosate, an organophosphorus compound, is an herbicide that is applied to broadleaf plants and grasses to kill weeds. Glyphosate is used in agriculture, forestry, lawn management, weed control in industrial areas, and to control aquatic plants. In agricultural operations this herbicide is commonly associated with the following crops: corn, rye, flax, lentils, peas, non-GMO soybeans, buckwheat, millet, canola, sugar beets, and potatoes and in aquatic applications it is used to control reed canary grass, cattails, purple loosestrife, phragmites, water hyacinth, and water lettuce (Source). For non-agricultural uses, it is used for "road-side treatments", lawns, nurseries, and golf courses. Some common trade names for herbicides that contain glyphosate include: Accord, Glyphomate, Roundup, Rattler, Rodeo, Pondmaster, and many others. For a guide on herbicides, trade names, and target species Click Here.
Glyphosate’s biologic half-life ranges from 3 days to over 170 days depending on the environmental conditions; it is strongly adsorbed to soils and the chemical is primarily decomposed by microorganisms in the environment. In surface water, such as lakes and ponds, the half-life is 12 to 120 days and the compound is slightly vulnerable to photodecomposition (sunlight will accelerate its breakdown). For humans and animals, glyphosate does not easily pass through the skin, but once it enters the body it is not significantly altered; it will flush from the body via urine and fecal material in about 3 weeks. (Source).
Some adverse effects from direct contact with the herbicide include temporary symptoms of dermatitis, eye ailments, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Glyphosate has been linked to potential toxic effects to human embryonic cells and endocrine disruption. Long-term feeding studies in animals were assessed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory authorities. Based on these evaluations, they found there is no evidence glyphosate is toxic to the nervous or immune systems. They also found it is not a developmental or reproductive toxin. In an interesting article on the human interactions with glyphosate "Facts and Fallacies in the Debate (2017)," the EPA has classified glyphosate as "not likely to be carcinogenic to humans (Source). Recent court cases of note related to the suspected health effects of glyphosate can be found in these sources:

Glyphosate is regulated as a primary drinking water standard and the MCL and MCLG are both 0.7 mg/L. The EPA has a DWEL of 70 mg/L (noncarcinogenic) and the EPA classification for glyphosate "not classifiable as to human carcinogenicity". Canada has a standard of 0.28 mg/L.
One-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to one day of exposure. The One-Day HA intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 20 mg/L.
Ten-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to ten days of exposure. The Ten-Day HA intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is also 20 mg/L.
When is testing for glyphosate wise or advisable? It would be wise or advisable to test for glyphosate under the following conditions:
A study by the USGS in the Mid-Atlantic Region found some of the most commonly used synthetic organic compounds are atrazine and other trazines, metolachlor, and alachlor.
Level 1 Testing is done with simple observations that an individual can make with their own senses such as sight, smell, and taste. These observations can be readily apparent or can be observed as they change over time. In addition, accessible related information about the home can also be used to narrow down the cause of your water issues.
The only real self-screening test for glyphosate is location, location, location and knowing what chemicals are used in your community and what chemicals are used with specific land-use or other activities that are associated with glyphosate. You may also want to look for warning signs of other contaminants that may be associated with glyphosate. For agricultural areas this might include bacteria and nitrates. It is unlikely you have a problem with glyphosate and other pesticides if you get your drinking water from a regulated community water supply. However, if you get your water from an unregulated source, spring, or a transient water supply, be aware that these sources are not regularly tested for glyphosate and other synthetic organic compounds.
Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.
We are not aware of a low-cost screening test or tool for glyphosate, but there are some in-home testing kits that do screen for pesticides. In most cases, these kits screen for the presence of triazines. In addition, you may want to screen your fruits and vegetables for pesticide residuals and if you are experiencing health issues you may want to consider the environmental sensitivity and intolerance testing.

Level 3 Testing is done through an accredited Water Testing Laboratory. With Level 3 Testing, you can order a testing kit that is used to prepare your sample and submit it to the lab. By utilizing a lab, you have the assurance that a certified water expert had analyzed your water sample. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment options (see below) or continue to Level 4 Testing - Certified Testing.
Most quality informational water testing kits include testing for common synthetic organic compounds and herbicides/pesticides, but glyphosate is commonly a specialized test. We initially recommend the National Testing Labs screening test. If the level of glyphosate is high, we may recommend one or more of the other informational tests that include other Herbicides and Pesticides.

A Level 4 Certified Test Test uses chain-of-custody with a water professional coming to your home to prepare the water sample and then works with an accredited laboratory in order to certify your test results. This type of testing not only gives you the highest level of assurance in the accuracy of your test results, but can also be used as a document in legal cases. For Baseline Testing, we recommend that you use Certified Testing.
If you need certified testing for glyphosate, it would be advisable to test for a broader range of Herbicides and Pesticides, Nitrates and Nitrites, phosphate, Total Coliform Bacteria, E. Coli, and other pollutants associated with agricultural operations or activities associated with the use of glyphosate.
Glyphosate is not likely to be a be a problem with a community water supply system, but it may be a concern for a private source or transient water supply. Glyphosate is regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendment of 1986. Although glyphosate may be controlled by oxidation, it's "best available technology" for treatment is GAC adsorption (Source). If your water source has elevated levels of glyphosate, it is likely that other contaminants related to this herbicide or associated activity may be present.
Based on this information, the primary recommendation is to either provide an alternative water source or a bottled water source for consumption. You should consider adding an inline or point-of-use carbon block or granular-activated-carbon filtration unit on drinking water fixtures, bathing facilities, and shower heads. It would be advisable to conduct a comprehensive water quality test for microbiological quality, general water quality, and a broad range of Herbicides and Pesticides.

Granular-activated-carbon filtration systems have been shown to be effective against glyphosate. Since other organics, chlorine, particles, and other compounds will react with the granular-activated-carbon (use up its treatment capacity), it is necessary to conduct a detailed biological and chemical analysis of the water and to develop a suitable treatment train that will ensure that your water is potable, i.e., drinkable. The best way to develop a long-term solution is to have a comprehensive water quality test and work with a water quality professional.
