Methane is a simple organic compound of carbon and hydrogen, CH4. If three of the hydrogens are replaced with chlorine, the result is chloroform, CHCl3. Trichloromethane, also known as methyl trichloride, merely requires that the carbon compound have three chlorines; it doesn’t absolutely require that the fourth thing attached to the carbon be a hydrogen – it could be sodium, for example. Trichloromethane, then, is a group of closely related compounds, all of which have one carbon and three chlorines plus something else which is why trichloromethane is sometimes written in the plural: trichloromethanes. Chloroform is one specific member of that trichloromethane group and usually the most common. Unless ‘trichloromethane’ is used in the plural, it most likely means chloroform.
Chloroform is both a man-made chemical and a naturally-occurring compound; probably 90% of it occurs naturally (Source). The natural sources of chloroform include: natural bacterial link processes in soils and sediments and volcanic and other geological processes. It is produced by a strong chlorine-containing oxidizing agent coming into contact with organic material.
Chloroform is a colorless volatile liquid that has a sweet taste and ether-like odor that is detectable by smell at a concentration of 6.1 mg/L (Source). Manufactured chloroform is used to make other compounds, as a solvent, in plastics manufacturing, and in refrigeration. In addition, chloroform is a by-product of the strong chemical oxidation of organic material associated with water and wastewater treatment, wood pulp chlorination, in chemical syntheses for refrigeration (Fluorocarbon- 22), and in plastics manufacturing. The primary source of chloroform in public water supplies is the disinfection process (chlorination) that is used to help ensure the water is microbiologically safe. When the chlorine reacts with naturally-occurring dissolved organic material in the water, a series of disinfection by-products, including chloroform, may form.
Chloroform can be found at trace levels in soil, animals, plants, and our food supply, but it does not appear that it bioaccumulates in the food-chain (Source). Chloroform tends to volatilize quickly so there is a potential air-borne route of exposure and it can also enter the body through consumption and dermal or skin contact. When chloroform enters the body, it is carried by the blood and it is temporarily stored in fat cells, the liver, and kidneys. Once the exposure has ended, the chloroform volatilizes and is released into the air we exhale, as well as in our urine and waste products.
Animal testing using chloroform suggests that this chemical may be a carcinogen or cause birth defects in humans and it is known that in humans chloroform adversely influences the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Dermal contact with high concentrations of chloroform has been associated with the presence of skin irritation and sores. (Source).
There is no specific federal drinking water standard for chloroform, but there is a federal drinking water standard for trihalomethanes (note the plural). The MCL for trihalomethanes is 0.08 mg/L, but the state of Wisconsin has a standard of 0.006 mg/L.
One-Day HA: The concentration of chloroform in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse non-carcinogenic effects for up to one day of exposure. The One-Day HA is intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 4 mg/L
Ten-Day HA: The concentration of chloroform in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse non-carcinogenic effects for up to ten days of exposure. The Ten-Day HA is also intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 4 mg/L.
Lifetime HA: The concentration of chloroform in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse non-carcinogenic effects for a lifetime of exposure is 0.07 mg/L and the DWEL is 0.35 mg/L.
You should get your drinking water tested for chloroform if you are on a city water source that has a high chlorine odor or a regulated source that has a history of having high levels of trihalomethane. If you are in a rural area using an unregulated source, you would want to consider testing for chloroform if the source is disinfected using a chemical oxidizer like chlorine or if you are in an area where they are manufacturing or using chloroform. Chloroform can create a sweet or ether-like odor, but this occurs at a concentration 100 times the drinking water standard.
Level 1 Testing is done with simple observations that an individual can make with their own senses such as sight, smell, and taste. These observations can be readily apparent or can be observed as they change over time. In addition, accessible related information about the home can also be used to narrow down the cause of your water issues.
There are few warning signs of a problem with chloroform when the concentration of chloroform is below or at the drinking water standard, but if you are on a regulated water source that disinfects the water with a chemical oxidizer you may want to check the Consumer Confidence Report for the level of trihalomethane. You may suspect your water could have a high chloroform concentration if it is coming from a public surface-water source (because it would require disinfection, most likely by chlorination). If you are on a private system that does not disinfect the system, it is not likely chloroform is a problem (although bacterial contamination could be – there is a reason why water is disinfected), but you may be concerned if you are located near a site that has been contaminated with chloroform, a landfill, or an area with historic chloroform use or production. We suggest having a custom Neighborhood Environmental Report created for your residence. It is important to KnowYourH2O!
You may be concerned about chloroform under the following conditions:
Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.
We are not aware of a low-cost screening test or meter that can be used to document the level of chloroform in your water. Since chloroform is a volatile compound and there is an airborne exposure route, it may be wise to consider installing a monitor to check the air for total natural and synthetic volatile organic compounds (TVOC). There are some reliable low-cost air quality monitors that can monitor for TVOC that are associated with odors. The use of chloroform is "banned" in cosmetics in the USA, European Union, and Canada because it is considered carcinogenic, persistent and bioaccumulative. Some products, like triclosan, may contain chloroform because it is an unintended contaminant.
Point of Information: "21 CFR § 700.18 - Use of chloroform as an ingredient in cosmetic products"
"Chloroform has been used as an (intentional) ingredient in cosmetic products. Recent information has become available associating chloroform with carcinogenic effects in animals ... The Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, concludes that, on the basis of their findings, chloroform is a deleterious substance which may render injurious to users any cosmetic product that contains chloroform as an ingredient. (Source: Sec. 700.18 Use of chloroform as an ingredient in cosmetic products.) "
"Any cosmetic product containing chloroform as an ingredient is adulterated ("compromises the safety or effectiveness of said substance") and is subject to regulatory action under sections 301 and 601(a) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Any cosmetic product containing chloroform in residual amounts from its use as a processing solvent during manufacture, or as a byproduct from the synthesis of an ingredient, is not, for the purpose of this section, considered to contain chloroform as an ingredient."
So chloroform is "banned", but it may still be present as a contaminant?
Point of Information: "Triclosan: an antibacterial agent and preservative in personal care and home-cleaning products; persistent and bioaccumulative; a hormone disruptor; a skin, lung, and eyes irritant; may be contaminated with chloroform and dioxins" (Source).

Level 3 Testing is done through an accredited Water Testing Laboratory. With Level 3 Testing, you can order a testing kit that is used to prepare your sample and submit it to the lab. By utilizing a lab, you have the assurance that a certified water expert had analyzed your water sample. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment options (see below) or continue to Level 4 Testing - Certified Testing.
Most high quality informational water testing kits include testing for chloroform, trihalomethanes, and other volatile organic compounds. For city water sources, chloroform has been detected in over 24,000 public water supply systems. If you are on a public water supply we would recommend the National Testing Labs City Water Check Deluxe. If you are a private system that is not disinfected, it is not likely that you have a problem with chloroform but if you are concerned we would recommend the National Test Labs Water Check Standard. If there is a known source in the area or you are concerned about volatile organics and pesticides, we recommend the Well Water Check Deluxe.

A Level 4 Certified Test Test uses chain-of-custody with a water professional coming to your home to prepare the water sample and then works with an accredited laboratory in order to certify your test results. This type of testing not only gives you the highest level of assurance in the accuracy of your test results, but can also be used as a document in legal cases. For Baseline Testing, we recommend that you use Certified Testing.
If you need certified testing for chloroform, it would be advisable to test for a broader range of Disinfection Byproducts and volatile organic compounds and it would be wise to field test the sample for free and total chlorine and document the pH, temperature, appearance, and conductivity of the water at the time of sampling.
Order a Neighborhood Environmental Report to learn about potential hazards in your community.
It is more likely that a city or regulated community water supply would have detectable levels of chloroform compared to an unregulated or private drinking water source. Volatile organic compounds can typically be treated and removed from water using a combination of air sparging/ air stripping, carbon filtration, and reverse osmosis, but reverse osmosis is used as only a final barrier and typically only has a limited removal capacity.
Since chloroform is a volatile compound, it may be possible to boil the water to reduce the chloroform content of the water. The space must be well ventilated because you can be exposed to chloroform via inhalation. It has been reported that 34% to 75% of the chloroform, depending on the chemical oxidizer used to disinfect the water will volatilize if you boil the water for 1 minute (Source), but a combination of boiling and then Carbon Filtration may be a more thorough, viable option. Because bathing in water with chloroform can result in dermal and inhalation exposure, it may be wise to consider the use of a shower filter that contains granular activated carbon or consider using an in-line carbon filter with proper ventilation, but this depends on the level or concentration of chloroform in the water.

Regarding developing a long-term solution, it is critical to understand the source, extent, and nature of the contamination, but also to understand that the common treatment system will also remove any chlorine or disinfection residual in your water. Since chloroform is associated with disinfection by-products, this is more likely a potential issue for a regulated water source. It is less likely for chloroform to be a problem for a private or unregulated groundwater source (Source), but if present, it is likely associated with a direct connection to a surface water source or a source very susceptible to near-surface activity contamination.
The most common treatment application for a user would be a granular-activated-carbon filtration system that may be a combination of whole-house treatment systems or point-of-use devices. If the site is associated with a near-surface contamination event, the treatment system may need to include a combination of treatment systems that may include UV Disinfection, Carbon Filtration, and in some cases Reverse Osmosis. In addition, it is also advisable to remediate or mitigate the contamination event or release before implementing a long-term solution.
