Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a solvent that is used as a degreasing agent for metal parts used in consumer products like glues, dry cleaning agents, finishes, paint/stain removers, typewriter correction fluid, lubricants, adhesives, used to make other chemicals like refrigerants. TCE is clear and colorless, sometimes with a blue tint, and has a sweet, fruity odor like chloroform or ether; it is highly volatile. Trichloroethylene is also known as TCE, acetylene trichloride, ethylene trichloride, and trichloroethene. Primary issues with TCE contamination are typically associated with old dumps and landfills and historic industrial spills and releases.
Exposure to TCE has been associated with adverse impacts on the central nervous system, fetal development, immune system, reproductive system, kidneys, and the liver. TCE is also associated with an increased risk of liver cancer.
The likelihood of a health effect depends on the amount and duration of TCE exposure.
From animal studies, TCE has been associated with poor or slower rate of development, such as low body weight, adverse impacts to the nervous and immune systems, and heart defects. Long-term exposure has been associated with cancer (liver cancer very likely and blood cancer strongly suggested). Exposure to TCE can happen through consumption, dermal contact, and inhalation. Inhalation is one reason vapor exposure is a concern for TCE. In some animal studies, exposure to trichloroethylene during development may have caused effects such as decreased body weight, increased incidences of heart defects, functional or structural changes in the developing nervous system, and effects on the immune system." Some human studies indicate that trichloroethylene may cause developmental effects such as spontaneous abortion, congenital heart defects, central nervous system defects, and small birth weight. However, these people were exposed to other chemicals as well.
Trichloroethylene is regulated as a primary drinking water standard and the MCL is 0.005 mg/L, but the maximum contaminant level goal is actually zero. Maine has a drinking water limit of 0.004 mg/L and Minnesota has a chronic health risk limit of 0.0004 mg/L and a cancer-based limit of 0.002 mg/L. The standard was set because of concerns related to inducing cancer in humans. The EPA has a DWEL of 0.2 mg/L (noncarcinogenic) and long-term exposure of 0.3 mg/L because of the risk of cancer.
You should get your drinking water tested for TCE when you suspect your drinking water has been impacted by an old chemical disposal system, chemical manufacturer, landfill, or an industrial spill or release. In addition, TCE can have a sweet or chloroform odor at 28 mg/l, but this occurs when the concentration is over 1000 times the drinking water standard.
Level 1 Testing is done with simple observations that an individual can make with their own senses such as sight, smell, and taste. These observations can be readily apparent or can be observed as they change over time. In addition, accessible related information about the home can also be used to narrow down the cause of your water issues.
There are few warning signs of a problem with trichloroethylene when the concentration at which TCE produces an odor is so much higher than the drinking water standard. The best screening test is location, location, and location. Are you located in an area that has historic problems associated with the use of TCE? If you are on a city water system, it is not likely that trichloroethylene would exceed the drinking water limit, but it has been detected in over 450 public water systems.
Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.
We are not aware of a low-cost screening test or meter that can be used to document the level of TCE in your water. In cases of TCE exposure via an industrial spill an airborne route of exposure is also a possible route of contamination. There are some reliable low-cost air quality monitors that can monitor for total natural & synthetic volatile organic compounds causing most odors (TVOC). TCE breaks down within the body and is temporarily stored in fat and released into the urine. It is unlikely that a city or regulated community water supply sources would be contaminated with TCE, but this is more likely for private water supply systems or transient non-community systems. This may be a concern if you are located near a leaky industrial site, contaminated site, old landfill, an area with a known or suspected release, or in an area with a historic use of TCE. Volatile organic compounds can typically be treated and removed from water using a combination of air sparging/ air stripping, Carbon Filtration, and Reverse Osmosis, but reverse osmosis is used as only a final barrier.
Because of concerns related to the exposure to TCE via consumption, inhalation, and dermal contact, the primary recommendation is to develop an alternative potable water source and to use bottled water. For trace levels of TCE and volatile organic contamination, it may be advisable to use a point-of-use Carbon Filtration.

Regarding developing a long-term solution, it is not only critical to understand the source, extent, and nature of the contamination, but also to understand the secondary contaminants that may be associated with TCE. For example, TCE contamination associated with old landfills will typically also have elevated levels of trace metals, Iron, Manganese, heterotrophic bacteria, some salts, and other organics. Therefore, the treatment system may need to include oxidation/filtration, air stripping or Carbon Filtration, UV Disinfection, and even Reverse Osmosis.
